As today, Partners have always been made aware of the escape routes from their department. This was to ensure their safety as well as that of the customer.

I notice that the fire exit stairs in the last photo don't appear to go anywhere!

Re Jo's comment. There was a walkway across the roof which led to an iron staircase down to ground level at the rear of the shop. There were landings on the way down where fire exits from other floors joined the staircase.
